Pictorem – a place to sell your art?

I’ve been with Fine Art America for years, in fact, since 2011, and I now have 2759 images uploaded there and for sale. Over the years, I have earned around $4500 from the site, mainly on print sales although they also sell many other products. For the $30 annual fee, which provides you with your own personalized site, it has been pretty good for me. I wrote about my results on Fine Art America in quite a few posts on this site, but this one about using Social Media is one of the key ones. I’ve also written more recently about getting new followers for your portfolio blog and whether it is actually a goal that is worth aiming for – depending on your style of photography, it might not be worthwhile. My site over at Fine Art America is this one:

Fine Art America is reasonably easy to use, you upload images in batches of five – uploading and then selecting which gallery or collection it is to go into. All the other settings can be preset and added as defaults, including the pricing for many products. Strictly speaking you are supposed to check the alignment of your images on the various products, but as I’m after print sales, I never bother with that. The site reads the keywords, title and description that I enter in Lightroom without issue. Also, you can put an image in any number of collections so if it is a sunset and an image taken in Alaska, it will go into both. I don’t really think many people land here and go through many galleries – I believe that most buyers find an image on Google and go more directly to the image page itself. That is what I have gleaned from various answers on the FAA forum. FAA does place our images into Google searches and if a sale results from a click on one of those paid ads, FAA takes a share of the commission you would otherwise have earned.

Pictorem – a new entrant in the Print on Demand scene

I joined Pictorem back in the spring, and what attracted me was that they focused prints, of different types, and also had some great ways of displaying prints on the walls of different rooms to allow people to see the different sizes and how they might look. Finally, they have free shipping for the USA and Canada and while that means they have built that into the cost, it does make a difference, I believe when people are thinking of buying and getting to the shopping cart stage. They have different designs for the website front end. I chose a simple black version:

A friend of mine has the white background that displays the image title when you hover over it before clicking to see the image page:

The site and the company are a work in progress, I believe. When I joined, the import process used the file name as the title of the piece. And, if my memory is correct, they didn’t import all the keywords. I spoke to the owner and main developer and explained how my stock photo images were all set up with Titles, Descriptions and Keywords and it would be much easier if those were imported. That following weekend he developed the functionality and I have had no real issues in using that. Similarly, the process to upload an alternative image for an existing print was not smooth – that has been improved. I also asked about using my own URL for my personal page. After a month or two, that has now been launched and so https://www.steveheap.com takes you to my Pictorem site and works on all the pages. The format for the page is subtly different, with the shopping cart along the top, but he is working on different alternative designs for this header area. In addition, I believe they are working on updating and endhancing the gallery structure there as well. By the way, I have an affiliate link for Pictorem if you are thinking of signing up. It gives me a small commission if you choose one of the packages they offer, so please use it if you don’t mind!

What I like about Pictorem is the simple approach to uploading. If you have the metadata of title, description and keywords in place, you select the gallery that the images are to go into in the upload area and then select as many images as you like. All of them are uploaded, the relevant data added and they are placed in the right gallery. If you have a mixed gallery import, I either upload them in two groups, or upload them to the most common gallery and then use the keyword search to move the others into the right gallery. So much easier than FAA, especially for large number of images. I now have almost 1000 images in Pictorem – I have tended to be more selective here than at FAA – not sure if that will make any real difference in the long terms. So, ease of upload and focus on prints is the main attraction, I think.

The landing page shows the most popular images only. There are no ways currently to alter that and the “most popular” is some combination of sales and views. As you can see on Shelia’s page, if you keep adding galleries, they simply double up at the top of the page – not a great design. And there is no way to show a gallery view with a chosen image as the thumbnail. I think they will get there, but it is what it is. I personally am not too concerned. I think that many people will go to my site via a link to an image – either one of mine, one from Twitter or Instagram, or perhaps from a search on Google. Quite early on, I sold three images via Pictorem for almost $500 profit and that was before I had all my images there. You do get to know the name, address and email of the buyer which means that you could contact them – much different there from FAA. I did send an email to all three recently, but got no reply! I guess they thought it was spam? I asked them how they found my images, but of course I don’t know without a reply!

Packages on Pictorem

There is a free package for up to 250 artwork uploads, that is much better than FAA. Then there are two other Pro packages, that both give you unlimited uploads and your own Gallery (which can have your own URL). One is $60 a year, the other is $155 a year. The main difference is that the more expensive “Featured” account gives you more marketing with priority listing on their site and an Artist Showcase on mailing and social media. I have spoken to the CEO about this – he confirms that it is still a work in progress. They do marketing, of course, and do promote these artists, but he is not sure it is working as well as it should yet. I have signed up to the normal Premium package at $50 a year and will revisit this marketing package later.

Quality of the results

So, far, I don’t personally know, but I have ordered a 30×20 inch acrylic print of one of my images that is going to be displayed in a local gallery during an exhibition. With the artist 15% discount, the total price for this was $123, which I thought was pretty fair. I’ll update this once the print arrives to let you know what I think!

Summary

I think the free shipping is a big advantage of Pictorem and I think the new and flexible team really want to hear from contributors on how best to improve the site. By all means add any thoughts to the comments below and I will make sure the developers get to know of your ideas and new ones that I have. I think people are not really interested in my best work – they don’t want a picture of somewhere because it is taken by me. I think they want a picture of somewhere or of something and my work happens to catch their eye. As such, organizing the landing page is not high on my priorities. I do like the effective search function so you can send people just to the images of Morgantown, for example, with a search URL and they also provide those little QR codes so you can quickly point someone at a specific image. It would be nice to have a QR code of a search result – perhaps that could be an improvement in the future. The pricing seems fair, and the identification of the buyers could prove useful as well. Quality I will judge soon, but none of the three orders were returned so that is a good sign. So far so good! Again, here is my link in case you are interested in signing up! And if you do become a contributor there, I formed a group on Facebook to allow us to promote our art. It is called Pictorem Artists and feel free to join and post your own images and links to your Pictorem site.

I just started with Pictorem and can confirm your impressions. Some things are really good – like the upload process, and the “product view” of frames, canvas etc on the wall. The “free” shipping I think will be a major differentiator from FAA – free shipping is all but expected these days. On the down side, while Pictorem looks like a good place for print fulfillment, it can’t be much of a “gallery” site IMHO until they give us some more customization of our pages.

    • Steven Heap says:

Yes, the gallery bit is not really under our control, as you say. As I mentioned, I’m not sure I’m that bothered, but time will tell!

  2. What a great post, Steve – excellent! You’ve highlighted so many of the questions that we all have about Pictorem and how it relates to what most of us are using (FAA). It’s great that you have access to the developers at Pictorem. As for not being able to select a cover photo on the main page – that’s not really high on my priority, either, but I would like to have that option.

    • Steven Heap says:

Thanks Deb. I’m focusing my marketing there at the moment – hoping the free shipping makes all the difference!

  3. Very nicely done, Steve. I have had a similar experience with Pictorem and have had over a dozen nice sales – with none being returned. I, am about to order a piece that my wife wants so I will also get to judge, first hand, their quality. I also believe the Free Shipping can help close a sale – a lot of people today look for and/or expect free shipping. I have been with Fine Art America for nine years and do like what they provide, however I am beginning to switch my marketing efforts to Pictorem. I also (very much) like their referral program. In July I earned a referral fee on three sales – where someone bought the work of another artist rather than me.

    • Steven Heap says:

Thanks Bill! How do you use your referral link when you are posting your own images on Twitter say? Do you add the code to the end of the image page URL and it is through that that someone later buys a print from another artist? I can see how to use the code as I did in this article, to ask someone to sign up using it – less sure about using it for pieces of artwork.

Im always interested in reading honest reviews of POD sites like this one. Pictorem looks really interesting and you have created a great site. Pity they are just focused on USA/ Canada at the moment so not for me at this stage

    • Steven Heap says:

Yes, I think they may expand, but for now they seem focused on North America. I hope they continue to be successful!

  5. Bob Decker says:

I do like the no-shipping and especially the room/wall examples and ability to use those in my personal marketing. However, I’ve yet to see a sale. Only time will tell. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    • Steven Heap says:

I wish I had some better understanding of how my buyers found the site and why I got 3 sales in such a short period, but I don’t want to bug those buyers!

  6. Definitely of interest to me and appreciate all the information you provided.

  7. Thanks for this informative assesment Steve! I have also signed on with Pictorem recently. At the moment I am using the free package but I do forsee in the future when I will want to upgrade for unlimited uploads. Like you I think the main advantage this new site has over the competition is the free shipping to North America. I am looking forward to hearing what you thought about the print quality as well.
    Cheers and happy selling!

I tried Pictorem in July with a small number of artworks. This was a bad idea: After putting my artworks on Pictorem I found some of my artworks on Society6, Redbubble and Fine Art America. It was low quality (blurry) of my artworks: It was clearly created from a screen copy of the original on a website; and I strongly believe it was Pictorem. The issue with Pictorem is that they display a rather large preview with a very weak protection: the watermark is barely visible.

This is why, I removed all my artworks from Pictorem. I won’t publish here till they offer a better protection.

    • Steven Heap says:

That is up to you, of course. I take a less active view of thefts – I know my images are all over the place including properly licensed ones on various sites, and so people can find my images if they want to. I don’t choose to put watermarks on the FAA images and so it doesn’t bother me that Pictorem only has a small watermark. Just a different way of looking at it, I guess.

I uploaded an image of mine and then ordered a metal print (12×17) on September 15th to test out Pictorem. It is October 4th and they are just now getting to the mounting portion of the print. Does it normally take 3 -4 weeks to order and get something delivered from them? Do others find this to be the case with Pictorem or at other print companies? Seems excessive, but this is the first time I’ve ordered a print.

    • Steven Heap says:

I must admit that my print took longer than expected. I wrote to them and got apologies and the comment that they were struggling with staff levels. The quality of the print was excellent, though.

  10. Jeff says:

Ended up being 4 weeks from order to delivery. The print is great but they did put the wrong hanger onto the float mount. Paid for french cleat, but got a wire hanger instead. A small issue, and of course mistakes happen, but when you consider it took over 3 weeks to produce just one single print, there really is no excuse.

  11. Galeb says:

I’ve ordered my first aluminum print from this place on 27 Nov 2022. I received the print on 24 Dec 2022 and it came with a print artefact. I sent Pictorem the photos of the print artefact and asked how will this be dealt with. They said once you destroy your current print and send us proof of destruction then we’ll send you a new print.

This print is not hangable as is because it is flawed. I’m asked to destroy it and hope to get a new one without a flaw. No mention of refund?

After waiting a month for delivery of a flawed print and nasty customer service, I do NOT recommend this business.

    • Steven Heap says:

I’m sorry to hear this. I have no particular link to the company, although I have sold some things via them. I also ordered a biggish acrylic print last year and that turned up (with some delays I must admit) very nicely packaged and in excellent condition. But it is up to you whether to use it or not.

Great article outlining your experience with Pictorem. I am just beginning to sell my photos and uploaded a handful of photos on pictorem. I can confirm the ordering experience as the same others have voiced, the shipping time is extremely long. Order took 4 weeks from order placed to shipping. I also got the “staffing issue” response when I reached out to them. The art was sent to my brother who seemed to really like it.

  13. CMC says:

I am wondering what percentage most artists charge of printing costs. The choice is 50 – 100 percent.

    • Steven Heap says:

I think most would be at 100%. I didn’t know it was limited to that range though. I have chosen the margin per square foot and set it to $24.

  14. Patricia says:

Hi Steven, Have you given up on pictorem? I searched for your portfolio but I only saw one image under your name.

  15. Dave says:

Good post Steven, and it made for an interesting read. I joined Pictorem late last year and made two sales (in Oct and Dec)… then nothing since. I currently have a free account, so only 250 images on there, and I was waiting to see how things progressed before opting for a subscription. I’ve been with FAA since 2009, and I’ve become very disillusioned with it recently (as I know others have too), so I’m now taking a harder look at Pictorem. What are your thoughts now nearly 2 years on from this blog post? Are you still happy with Pictorem? Are they still developing the site and listening to artist feedback (something sadly lacking at FAA)? What have sales been like and have you had to do a lot of promotion? Cheers.

    • Steven Heap says:

I’m still keen on Pictorem and it’s been the focus of my promotion efforts. I think I’ll write a post about those efforts probably next week. If you do decide to sign up for a package at the site, my referral code is in the ad on the right hand side of the blog. I’ll cover the sales story as well.

      • Dave says:

Okay, thanks. I’ll keep an eye out for your blog post. I wrote to them with a bunch of questions a few days ago, but they haven’t got back to me yet. I’m still very much on the fence over a subscription (for now).

I'm always interested in what you think - please let me know!
