Selling Prints of your Images

One of the disappointments of stock photography is that you can sell hundreds (eventually!) of downloads, but you rarely get the satisfaction of seeing them in print, or, even better, knowing that someone else liked the image enough to get it printed for their home or office wall. I did come across one of my images of Overall Run Falls in a copy of the Guide to the Shenandoah National Park, which was nice:

But my biggest kick was seeing that one of my images on FineArtAmerica had been ordered as a 30inch x 24 inch canvas wrap. The image in question is a dramatic HDR image of Elakala Falls in Blackwater Falls State Park in WV – it graces the walls of my own home – but it is a great feeling to hear that it has been found among the thousands of images available on that site for printing, and at such a large size.

On the business side, this website allows you to upload as many images as you want, but in the free account, you can only have 25 of them available as print on demand. I only had about four images there on the site, and so to have one of four picked is great. You get to set how much you want for the image – I had chosen $25 for a print of this size, and then the company manages all the printing and fulfillment of the print. As usual, as soon as I have one sale, I’m enthused to get more images online and available and so I quickly added enough new images to get to my 25 limit. Uploading is easy, especially if your images are already described and keyworded, and takes perhaps 1 minute per image to get them online. I’m now waiting to see if there are more print orders for me on this site!
