Society6 – more sales
I’m becoming more and more impressed with Society6 – I sold two items in March for $24.60. One of them is a digital painting of the skyline of San Diego printed on wood blocks. My profit was $18 on that one:
Yes, the site is very manual in terms of how you can upload images and apply them to products, which I have written about before, but with only 32 assets on the site, the earnings have been great.
The digital painting is done with an application from Jixipix called Watercolor Studio. I like playing with it when I am just looking to relax and you can very easily shift between the different presets and then customize the one you like. I just created a water color of one of my bengal cat series and have uploaded that to my shop on Society6 to see if that will attract any interest. This one was a photo of the cat isolated against white, but with a color wash to the background you can get an interesting canvas even though there was nothing in the original photograph.
If you have a Society6 account, please click “Like” against one or two of my products – I’ve no idea exactly how their search engine works, but I’m sure it will take popularity into account in some way! I’m thinking I might upload these to the stock agencies as well – would make a nice “I’m Sorry” card perhaps!
Another thing you have to be careful of on this site is, you have to manually set your prices for all print items. The site defaults to 0 markup, so if you are not careful, you could make $2 on a large print
Yes – I always have a picture of my pricing (from an earlier blog post) on my screen when I create products. The first two art prints need adjustment. It would be great if you could set default pricing!

Glad to know that you are getting Sales on Society6! Im kinda frustrated with it – not sure what to post there as my current uploads never been sold. Do u think photos converted to watercolor work better than plain photos?

Hi Vicky – I’m not sure. I didn’t get much action for a few months, but then it picked up. I’ve sold 7 products with the skyline of Chicago, 2 of that watercolor of San Diego, 1 of the moon over Washington DC and 1 of the Cherry Blossoms in DC. I don’t think I can detect much of a pattern so far – I keep trying things to see what sticks!
Yeah, I guess all we can do: try, and try again 🙂 Can you kindly share any decent filter to create watercolor from the photo? Want to give it a try…
I use the Jixipix Water Color Studio application. It does work as a plugin as well as a standalone program. Here is the link to it.

Hey Steven, I have tried to signup for an istock contributor account without any luck. I have been able to signup to Ghetty though but the agreement mentions “Exclusive”. Not sure I want to go exclusive. Can you give me some direction on signing up to istock? Thanks.
Its a very long time since I did this! It looks like there is a combined application via an App: https://www.gettyimages.com/workwithus. You don’t want to sign up to be exclusive. Not sure that makes sense these days.
